At The Prairie School, we have coined the term "A7" to describe our mission to shape not only the intellect of our students, but also the character of the whole young person. We focus on developing 7 traits in our students - all begin with the letter A. Our work begins in Early School and builds on itself through the Upper School, changing as the child matures.
ACADEMIC
The eagerness to learn is kept active throughout The Prairie School education experience. Our programs and curriculum awaken, challenge, and energize students, nurturing young people's natural curiosity. Our students are lifelong learners who will keep pace with their changing world.
ACCOUNTABLE
For a society to flourish, its citizens must develop social responsibility, integrity and empathy, and a respect for the dignity of all. Students learn that these ethical components are social necessities and personal obligations.
ACTIVE
The state of our communities and our world depend on the individual's willingness and ability to participate on many levels: personal, professional, and civic. Students recognize that what they do can make a better society - and that their contributions are important and appreciated.
ALTRUISTIC
At Prairie, we feel a great commitment to instill in students a sense of service to others. Values like honor, respect, responsibility, accountability, purposefulness, integrity, tolerance, civility, and community are threads that are woven throughout a Prairie education. We teach our students to be leaders and contributors to society. Our Honor System, developed by Upper School students, sets guidelines and empowers students to take responsibility for their actions.
ARTISTIC
We give students many forms of self-expression to enrich their lives: through choral and instrumental groups, theatrical presentations, and working in various media in the communication and visual arts. Through the fine, creative, and performing arts, our students learn to express themselves - and understand how visual artists, composers, and playwrights speak to society. This important dimension will serve students all their lives, helping them grow in empathy, understanding, and sensitivity to the world around them.
ATHLETIC
At Prairie, we not only teach the skills and strategies of various sports, we also use play and games to teach life lessons: cooperation, sportsmanship, practice and skill development, support for peers, and the importance of fair play. Friendly competition has taken many of our teams to state-level recognition.
ADAPTABLE
Our children benefit from a superior academic program, and also learn important life skills to support their growth into adulthood. Being adaptable to change is a vital part of this learning process. The ability to adapt to situations within – and beyond – one's control is an invaluable lesson in life.
