FALL
In early October, take the PSAT. It is offered at Prairie and you are automatically registered to take it.

Start thinking about the kind of environment that would be best for your college experience. Consider visiting a large university and a small college so you can begin comparing what each type of school has to offer.

WINTER
College counseling classes begin with John Powell. Classes meet during most English conference days.

Sign up for at least one ACT and SAT test (you should take both), offered at various times throughout the winter and spring (if you plan to apply to a college or university that requires the new writing test, make sure you register for an ACT administration that offers it). See Test Dates and Registration Deadlines for the PSAT, SAT and ACT, plus Links to SAT and ACT for registration information and other services and products. You should take the SAT and/or the ACT again in your senior year.

Schedule a family meeting with Mr. Powell to discuss the college search process and to create a list of colleges to investigate.

SPRING
Visit colleges and universities of interest. Take advantage of all evaluative interviews available during those visits. These can strengthen your candidacy at a college or university.

Register for the SAT II's (hour-long subject tests) if you are recommended to take them, and/or if you plan to apply to a college or university that requires them. Only some of the most selective colleges in the country require SAT II tests, but many colleges will consider SAT II scores when evaluating an application. You may take up to three SAT II's on any test date. The College Board will include all SAT II scores when reporting your SAT I scores to colleges.

SUMMER AFTER JUNIOR YEAR
Visit more colleges and universities and interview! Make sure you explore "safety" schools as well as "reach" schools.

Begin thinking about college essay topics while you narrow down your college list.
