The curriculum in the Middle School is designed to begin preparing students for the more rigorous work of the Upper School. Students are taught how to learn and work in a variety of ways: independently, in small groups, and as a class.
ENGLISH
Students learn to write in different styles for a broad range of audiences. Reading passages increase in difficulty requiring deeper levels of comprehension.
SCIENCE
Young scientists practice the scientific method and test their own hypothesis in labs and in an individual project for the School's Science Fair.
MATHEMATICS
Middle School math involves pre-algebra and using calculators and computers to solve real-life problems.
SOCIAL STUDIES
The scope of study is broad, integrating geography, non-western cultures, the world's major economic systems, the origin of North American culture, American history, and government.
FOREIGN LANGUAGES
Middle schoolers are introduced to French or Spanish. Students concentrate on listening and pronunciation skills, basic vocabulary, and grammatical patterns.
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY
A combined library and technology center, our Student Resource Center offers students the latest in computer hardware and software programs. The SRC lab alone is home to 21 G3s, while other computers are located in classrooms throughout the school. Middle Schoolers design their own Home Page for the Internet and regularly use computers to facilitate their learning.
PERFORMING ARTS
The curriculum, already strong in music, art, chorus, and theatre production, expands to include a video production class where students learn to master authoring and graphics programs, sound recording and editing programs, digital cameras, and scanners.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Students choose from an array of team and individual sports: basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling.
