A Day in the Life
A Day in the Life

One of our Prairie students would like to share a typical school day with you. Follow along with Audrey as she tells you about her day in Middle School and what she likes best about The Prairie School. If you would like to visit our school in person, please contact our Admissions Office at admissions@prairieschool.com or call 262-260-4393.

Hi, I hear you're visiting the 7th grade today. Mrs. Benes, our Head of Middle School, asked me to take you with me through my day. My name is Audrey — and I'm really glad to show you around!

8:15 a.m.
I start every day at my locker with my buddies. While we talk, I check my schedule on the door, and I pack up my backpack for the morning. I've got about 15 minutes to get myself organized. Checking the schedule is important because every day is different. Today is an "A" day, so that means we're on our way to Mr. Broetzmann's science class.

8:30 a.m.
I like science. We just finished a unit on genetics. The 6th and 7th grade science fair is coming up — and I'm working with PowerPoint to show my findings. I also combined some photos that I took with a digital camera.

9:20 a.m.
Now we're off to Spanish. Miss Huarota really keeps you on your toes because she speaks only Spanish in class. WOW! At first, I couldn't keep up with all the words — but I've really gotten the knack now. In fact, I am enjoying Spanish so much that I hope to visit Spain during Interim when I am in Upper School. Hola, que pasa? (If you want to learn more about our cool Interim program, check out the information under the Upper School section of this site.)

Because today is an "A" day, I go see Mr. Broetzmann, my advisor. Mr. Broetzmann sort of keeps an eye on me and seven other students — we're sort of a group. He checks my agenda to be sure I've got my assignments completed. He also checks to see if I've recorded all of my grades. Mom and Dad have to sign my agenda tonight. It's one of the school's way of keeping in contact with students and parents. If I don't get my agenda signed — oops, there goes "casual day."

10:45 a.m.
Here we are in social studies. It's one of my favorites. I like studying about different cultures. I think it's interesting to learn how other people live. Other customs make you think about why we do things the way we do. We do lots of fun projects in this class.

11:35 p.m.
Let's dump my backpack at my locker and get down to the dining room for lunch — I'm starving. After lunch, we'll head outside to play football. Luckily, today wasn't the day my advisory group had to clean tables, so we've got free time. (Once every two weeks we clean and wipe off the tables the 7th and 8th grades use at lunch.) Yesterday, I used the time after lunch to go to the SRC - our Student Research Center - to finish up some homework.

12:20 p.m.
Let's get going to math. We're working on Algebraic reasoning with Mr. Huizinga. We get tons of math problems for practice. There's plenty of board work, and we keep notebooks so we can always go back over past problems. That's the thing I like best about they way Mr. Huizinga teaches. Whenever we finish learning something new, he always takes us back to things we learned in earlier units. It keeps me sharp and gives me confidence that I know a lot of math.

1:05 p.m.
Here's English — we're writing essays that explain the meaning of the literature we are studying. After we write our papers and get them back corrected, Mrs. Inbusch lets us rewrite them to improve our grade. We also work with laptops and get on the Internet to do some of our research. Outside reading is due on Monday or Tuesday, and we also have spelling checks.

1:50 p.m.
Today's art class is cool — a visiting artist, Shelby Keefe, will be demonstrating painting techniques. Shelby is a professional artist from Milwaukee and she is visiting our school all week. Tomorrow there is a special assembly just for her to show us her artistic talents.

2:40 p.m.
Last class of the day! We always have study hall for the last period — except "B" day when study hall is in the morning.

3:30 p.m.
Well, classes are over but I'm not going home quite yet. I'm off to see one of my teachers for a little extra help. Then at 5:30 p.m., I've got basketball practice! See you at the game on Saturday!
