One of our Prairie students would like to share a typical school day with you. Follow along with Ryan as he tells you about his day in Primary School and what he likes best about The Prairie School. If you would like to visit our school in person, please contact our Admissions Office at admissions@prairieschool.com or call 262-260-4393. My name is Ryan, and I'd like to show you what a day in my 3rd grade is like. |

After the bell rings, our day begins. We spend the first few minutes with each of us trying to solve the daily math message. While we're doing this our teacher, Mrs. Kalinoski, takes attendance, collects homework, and sends the lunch count to the office.

Today this is literature time. We read silently or out loud and then talk about our stories. We often bring in extra information that helps us understand the story better. For example, when we read Paddle to the Sea, we looked at maps of the Great Lakes and learned about lighthouses. We even built our own lighthouses and put them on display!

My friends and I are putting on a play... all with puppets we made in class! Here we are in front of our puppet theatre.

Welcome to spelling time. We use this time to learn new spelling words and do our spelling work in our workbooks. Every week we learn new rules about spelling at first I didn't like the rules, but now I think they make spelling easier.

Time to wash up for lunch. And then It's off to the dining room. Hmmm... I think today is pizza day. I can't wait! The food here is really good!

We go to recess on the playground. We go out every day unless it's raining or the weather is too cold. My friends and I like to play tetherball, foursquare, and soccer.

Down to the computer lab we're learning all about computers as part of our "future" unit. I'm using HyperStudio for my project, and even scanned some photos into the computer.

Here we are at math. Math always begins with doing the morning math message. We talk about the question, and someone volunteers to solve the problem. These days we're also playing math games to sharpen up our addition and subtraction. We often play with partners and then put our answers into our math journals so our teacher can see our work.

Now line up with me because gym is next. We get to play lots of games, and sometimes we use the ropes and rings. This is a great time.

This is choice time. We have a snack, and we get to choose what we would like to do. There's lots to choose from: board games, drawing, computer time, legos, clay, reading or writing. I'm learning to play chess with my friend, James.

We end our day with writing time. We're studying about autobiographies, and today we are brainstorming topics that we could be useful in our own autobiography. We get to choose three to five things to include about ourselves. My friends are mentioning some things I hadn't thought of before. Brainstorming always helps me get good ideas.

Time to go home. You know, this was just one day in my life, and each day is different. Tomorrow I'll have music and science. |
