Extracurricular activities and special experiences are important for Upper School youth and are highly prized by colleges and universities. At The Prairie School, we offer a rich collection of outside activities: clubs, sports, musical and theatre groups, as well as volunteer organizations. These experiences are all a fun way to expand interests, build character, and learn to work with others.
INTERIM EXPERIENCE
Alumni tell us that this two-week program of on-campus seminars and off-campus experiences is one of the most valuable educational opportunities the Upper School offers. Supervised by faculty, professionals, businesses, and community groups, Interim offers endless choices for exploring future careers and experiencing the joy of learning something new often in areas that standard academic teaching never touch. For example, students have interned in banks, medical labs, and advertising agencies; studied with the symphony; backpacked in the Grand Canyon; and traveled to Europe.
LEADERSHIP AND OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAM
This is an exhilarating experience where students learn about themselves, their peers, and nature in a wilderness setting. Exploring personal boundaries, learning to rely on others, developing leadership skills, and developing inner strength are some of the themes of the program.
INDEPENDENT STUDY OPPORTUNITIES
Students who show a keen interest in a particular course may be given permission to work independently at an approved college or university, or work individually with a senior member of the Prairie faculty.
SPORTS
Students in Upper School can participate in a variety of sports: boys' and girls' cross country, boys' and girls' tennis, boys' and girls' soccer, boys' and girls' basketball, boys' and girls' golf, boys' wrestling and girls' volleyball.
PERFORMING ARTS
Prairie's Performing Arts Department brings together Upper School students with a wide variety of talents, skills and interests. From set construction to lighting design, students are "behind the scene" and in front of the lights as they produce several performances a year. Recent sell-out shows include "Fiddler on the Roof," "How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," and "Frankenstein."
