Terry Chapko – Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee

Terry Chapko attended Prairie from 8th through 12th grade, and his determination set him up for an impressive athletic career early on. While in the Upper School, he lettered in soccer and basketball three times each and, as a sophomore, was a member of the WISSA Boys’ Basketball State Championship Team. During his senior year, he was recognized as a First Team All-Conference player after leading the Midwest Classic Conference in scoring. Because of his steadfastness on and off the court, Terry was also the recipient of the Headmaster’s Award his senior year.

“Prairie opened my eyes to our increasingly globalized world — primarily through interactions with a diverse and vibrant student body. My experience playing sports at Prairie prepared me to achieve at a high level in all aspects of life through hard work, discipline and having fun.” – Terry

After Prairie, Terry continued his basketball career at Grinnell College in Iowa. Most notably, he led the NCAA in attempted three-point shots during the 1986-87 season. He also averaged twenty points per game and served as the team’s captain during his senior year.

In 1988, Terry graduated from Grinnell and enrolled at Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago. After earning his degree in 1995, he practiced as an employment attorney in San Diego, California before opening his own firm in 2004. Terry currently resides on Coronado Island, just over the San Diego Bay.
