Recaps for the Week of 9/1/25
Boys’ Soccer
In their home and season opener against Sturgeon Bay on Friday, August 29th, the Hawks brought home a decisive 3-1 win against the Clippers.
Under brand new Ruud Soccer Complex lights, and in front of a very big crowd, the boys settled into possession early and kept their composure throughout the physical game. The scoring opened with Jackson Meier ’27 making a great tackle, and Roy Rivera ’26 poking the ball away back to Meier who found the back of the net in the 18th minute.
Brennen Luchun-Ledvina ’26 added a goal in the 33rd minute with a powerful shot from outside the 18-yard box. Luchun-Ledvina added another goal in the 47th minute with a free kick that hit the crossbar before going in. The Clippers got on the board in the 77th minute, but their comeback fell short.
“The late chance was a bit unfortunate, but something to always learn from,” said Coach Joe Manley. “We were proud of the players’ efforts and a great start to the season against an organized and athletic team.”
Less than 16 hours later, the Hawks were back on the field and defeated South Milwaukee 6-0.
“It was a typical day after game,” said Manley. “We struggled to match the intensity of the night before, but it is early season and we learned a lot about ourselves.”
Emmett Wassil ’28 opened the scoring by driving a header into the back of the net in the 10th minute off a free kick from Luchun-Ledvina. After 20 minutes leading 1-0, the Hawks opened up the game with three goals before half by Rivera, Miles York ’26, and Luchun-Ledvina. Luchun-Ledvina added his second of the game off an assist from Meier, and Jonah Gasser ’28 added the last goal of the day off an assist from Rivera.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Hawks opened their season in a tournament at Wilmot on Saturday, August 30th and finished 2-3 on the long, 14-set day. The Hawks began the action by coming from behind to defeat Kenosha Christian Life 2-1 (22-25, 25-15, 15-12). They continued their winning ways against Horlick (25-19, 13-25, 15-10), before dropping the last three matches of the day to Badger (15-25, 23-25), Wilmot (25-20, 21-25, 14-16), and East Troy (19-25, 25-19, 7-15).
Bella Kekahbah ’26 led the way in kills with 32. Addie Zaleski ’27 and Brailey Johnson ’27 each added 27 kills on the day, while Zaleski tallied 14 aces. Defensively, Kaylin Shannon ’26 had six blocks and Zaleski led the way with 41 digs. Maddie Sanchez ’26, Emma Meier ’28, and Kekahbah each added 25 digs. Meier and Lily MacDonald ’29 shared the setting duties and had 68 and 32 assists, respectively.
Opening Metro Classic Conference play on Thursday the Hawks defeated Martin Luther 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-20).
“I was really impressed by the girls and how they played in our first conference game,” said Coach Kei Kondo. “Every player contributed, and our non-starters really picked us up when we were down 10 points in the third.”
Zaleski led the way with 17 kills and 4 aces. Meier had 20 assists, and Johnson added 10 digs for the Hawks.
Girls’ Tennis
The Hawks hosted an invite on Friday, August 29th and Saturday, August 30th against some tough competition. In their first match, they were pitted against Muskego and lost 0-7. Hiba Rahman ’27 and Alyssa Chen ’28 each played great singles matches at #2 and #3 singles respectively. Unfortunately, neither was able to pull off the win in a pair of 10 point tiebreakers.Ayela Schafer ’29 played to a first set tie-breaker in her first ever Prairie match (#4 singles), but ultimately fell 7-6 (3), 6-2.
Later on Friday, the girls took on Indian Trail and fell 2-5. After an injury forced all the singles players to play up a spot, Schafer capitalized on her opponent’s weaknesses at #3 singles to bring home a 6-3, 6-1 win. Prairie’s #1 doubles team of Maeve Harbour ’27 and Julia Greenwood ’29 secured the other victory for the Hawks (6-3, 6-3).
On Saturday, the Hawks started the day against Bradford and won 6-1. Chen (#2 singles), Schafer (#3 singles) and Luiza Jaime ’27 (#4 singles) all won their matches and our the doubles teams of Cate Vaccaro ’27 and Rahman (#1 doubles), Harbour and Ella Karegeannes ’26 (#2 doubles), and Bella Payes ’27 and Julia Camanho ’29 (#3 doubles) swept the doubles portion of the match.
Following their victory against Bradford, the Hawks fell to Thomas More recording wins at #2 and #3 doubles.
Against the Cavaliers, Coach Nich Schafer praised the play of Karegeannes and Rahman (#2 doubles), Payes and Jaime (#3 doubles), and Ava Lynott ’29 (#4 singles) who battled in a long, tough match before falling 7-5, 6-4.
In their last match of the day, the Hawks fell 2-5 to Westosha Central with wins by Jaime and Camanho (#3 doubles) and Schafer at #4 singles who won her match in tie-breaker fashion 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.
In a conference match against Thomas More on Tuesday, the Hawks were again stymied by the Cavaliers falling 1-6. Karegeannes and Camanho (# 2 doubles) recorded the Hawks only win by a score of 7-5, 6-3.
The girls continued conference play on Thursday sweeping St. Catherine’s/Racine Lutheran 7-0. Vaccaro won her #1 singles match in tie-breaker fashion with a 7-6 (4), 1-6, 10-4 score. Chen won 6-1, 6-1 at #2 singles, Schafer won at #3 singles, 6-0, 6-0 and Lynott completed the singles sweep with a 6-3, 7-5 score at #4 singles.
In doubles play, our three teams only conceded two total points in the matches with #1 doubles of Harbour and Greenwood winning 6-1, 6-0. Karegeannes and Camanho won 6-0, 6-0 at #2 doubles, and Jaime and Mayfield completed the sweep at #3 doubles by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
Boys’ & Girls’ Cross Country
In their opening meet under new Head Coach, Shawn Burwell, the Cross Country teams performed exceptionally well at the St. Joe’s Lancer Invite at UW-Parkside on September 1st. The girls took 3rd place as a team (out of 12) and had three medalists on the day: Helina Slamka ’28 led the way with a 4th place finish (21:29), while freshmen Eleanor Burwell (22:24) and Constanza Reyes Belaunzaran (22:58) finished 10th and 15th respectively.
Liam Anton ’29 led the way for the boys with a time of 24:04.
Girls’ Golf
In another SEC mini-meet on Thursday the Hawks continued to perform well against much larger schools, finishing in 2nd Place behind Franklin. Addy Ruetz ‘26 took overall medalist honors with a score of 42. Claire Holle ‘26 (50), Maddie Wruck ‘29 (51), Alivia Arnone ‘27 (55), and Willa Modder ‘27 (57) also shot great rounds for the Hawks.
Girls’ Swim
In their first meet of the season, the team travelled to Jefferson High School for conference relays on Thursday. With only five swimmers a relay meet can prove challenging, but the girls still scored 38 points and posted some impressive times. Their best finish came in the 400 Backstroke where they took 6th place with a time of 5:41.90. Jessica Gonzalez Escobar and Sophia Reeser (St. Catherine’s) combined with Riley Saenim ’26 and Jizel Diaz ’27 in that event.
